India batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad has created a huge List A cricket record by slamming 7 sixes in an over. Gaikwad did the same in the Vijay Hazare Trophy quarter-final clash on Monday. On the receiving end was Uttar Pradesh bowler Shiva Singh, who was hit for 6 6 6 6 6nb 6 6. Gaikwad became the first batsman in the history of white-ball cricket to have struck seven consecutive sixes in an over.
The opening batsman ended his supreme knock unbeaten on 220 off 159 balls, laced with 10 fours and 16 sixes. The incredible knock helped Maharashtra put up a total of 330/5 in 50 overs. Gaikwad now also holds the record for hitting the most runs in a single over – 42. This record was earlier held by Elton Chigumbura of Zimbabwe who had scored 39 off Alauddin Babu in a Dhaka Premier Division game back in 2013.
The 43 also became the joint-most expensive over in the history of List A cricket. The previous most expensive over was bowled by Northern Districts’s Brett Hampton and Joe Carter in New Zealand’s domestic 50-over game in 2018.
Most sixes in an over
In international cricket, Yuvraj Singh, Herschelle Gibbs, Kieron Pollard and Jaskaran Malhotra are the only players to have hit six sixes in an over.
In non-international cricket, the players who have hit six sixes in an over are Ross Whiteley, Hazratullah Zazai, Leo Carter Kieron Pollard and Thisara Pereira. Additionally, Indian origin Jaskaran Malhotra is the first American cricketer to hit six sixes in an over in any form of professional cricket. The USA cricket team batsman hit six sixes in an over during an ODI against Papua New Guinea.
