CPL winners list: Full list of winners

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) winners list is topped by Trinbago Knight Riders, formerly known as Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel, who are the most successful team in the Caribbean Premier League with four titles to their name.

The Caribbean Premier League is the most elite T20 cricket held in the Caribbean and among nations that comprise West Indies. Founded in 2013 by Cricket West Indies to replace the erstwhile Caribbean Premier Twenty20, the CPL then became the premier T20 competition.

Six teams compete in the Caribbean Premier League: Barbados Royals, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Jamaica Tallawahs, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, Saint Lucia Kings, and Trinbago Knight Riders. Antigua Hawkballs is a defunct team that ceased to exist in 2014 and was replaced by Nevis Patriots St Kitts instead.

The inaugural season of the competition in 2013 was won by Jamaica Tallawahs who defeated Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final. Besides, Trinbago Knight Riders, only Jamaica Tallawahs and Barbados Royals (earlier known as Barbados Tridents) are multiple-time Caribbean Premier League winners, winning the CPL title twice each. St Kitts Nevis Patriots won the CPL trophy for the first time in 2021 and are the defending champions this year. Guyana Amazon Warriors, meanwhile, have been extremely unfortunate as they have qualified for the CPL final on five occasions in seven seasons until CPL 2019 and have ended up losing every single time.

Without further ado, let’s discuss the season winners of the Caribbean Premier League below:

Caribbean Premier League 2013: Jamaica Tallawahs

As mentioned before, Jamaica Tallawahs won the very first season of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in 2013 after defeating Guyana Amazon Warriors by seven wickets in the CPL 2013 final.

During the league stages, actually Amazon Warriors had topped the table while Tallawahs had finished in the second position. Then-Tallawahs skipper Chris Gayle had led the run-chase for his side in the final and remained unbeaten with 47 runs off 48 balls while chasing 129.

Caribbean Premier League 2014: Barbados Tridents

Guyana Amazon Warriors missed out on the Caribbean Premier League trophy for the second consecutive season with an eight-run defeat in the final against Barbados Tridents. Dwayne Smith (59) and Shoaib Malik (55*) scored match-winning half-centuries as Tridents put up a score of 152/6 while batting first.

During the rain-interrupted match, Amazon Warriors were given the revised target of 116 in 15.5 overs with the application of D/L method. However, they could only score 107/4 and ended up falling short by eight runs.

Caribbean Premier League 2015: Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel

Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel, before they came to be known as Trinbago Knight Riders, secured the first of their four CPL titles with a 20-run victory over defending champions Barbados Tridents.

In this fixture, Kamran Akmal (60) and Cameron Delport (50) scored important fifties as Red Steel put up a strong total of 178/5 on the scoreboard. Their bowler Suleiman Benn then led proceedings and registered a spell of 2/24 to restrict Tridents to just 158/4 in 20 overs, thus winning by 20 runs.

Caribbean Premier League 2016: Jamaica Tallawahs

Jamaica Tallawahs won their second title in a match-up of the inaugural CPL final. This time, too, they went head-to-head with Guyana Amazon Warriors and emerged triumphant by a decisive margin of nine wickets.

The 2016 CPL final actually ended up being a low-scoring affair as Tallawahs chased down the target of 94 posed by the Warriors in just 12.5 overs. Imad Wasim, with a spell of 3/21, proved to be the match-winner for his side as Guyana were bowled out for just 93 while batting first.

Similar to his heroics in 2013, Chris Gayle once again led his side to victory scoring a 27-ball 54

Caribbean Premier League 2017: Trinbago Knight Riders

Trinbago Knight Riders matched Jamaica Tallawahs by becoming the second team to lift their second CPL trophy in 2017. They achieved that by defeating St Kitts and Nevis Patriots by three wickets in the final.

The Patriots were put to bat first and they went on to post 135/6 in 20 overs. In response, Trinbago held their nerves to nail the run-chase in 19 overs. The Knight Riders had been reduced to 12/2 by the second over, but they bounced back well with Colin Munro, Kevon Cooper, and Denesh Ramdin to win the final.

Caribbean Premier League 2018: Trinbago Knight Riders

Trinbago Knight Riders became the first team to win three titles in the Caribbean Premier League in 2018. They also became the first side to defend their CPL title after defeating Guyana Amazon Warriors by eight wickets in the final.

Batting proved to be the Achilles Heel for Amazon Warriors in the final once again as they limped their way to 147/9 in 20 overs. Khary Pierre proved to be instrumental for Knight Riders as he picked up three wickets for 29 runs in four overs.

Colin Munro then led the run-chase with his unbeaten 68 off 39 balls to get to the target in 17.2 overs. He had also finished as the highest scorer in the 2018 edition of the tournament with 567 runs in 13 innings.

Caribbean Premier League 2019: Barbados Tridents

After finishing at the bottom of the table in the previous season, Barbados Tridents bounced back in tremendous fashion and found themselves in the final against Guyana Amazon Warriors in 2019.

Jonathan Carter remained unbeaten on 50 off 27 balls at number seven to plot an eventual match-winning score of 171/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Barbados’ Raymond Reifer picked up a wonderful four-wicket haul as Guyana Amazon Warriors lost their fifth CPL final in seven seasons. With that win, Barbados Tridents became CPL winners for the second time in their history.

Caribbean Premier League 2020: Trinbago Knight Riders

Then three-time champions Trinbago Knight Riders further extended their dominance as the most successful team in the history of the Caribbean Premier League by adding their fourth CPL title in 2020. They became the first team to achieve this incredible feat in the Hero CPL.

They outclassed St Lucia Zouks by eight wickets in the CPL 2020 final held at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad and Tobago. Lendl Simmons played a match-winning knock of 84 runs from 49 balls and he also finished as the highest scorer in the competition that season.

Caribbean Premier League 2021: St Kitts and Nevis Patriots

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots became CPL winners for the first time in their history after defeating Saint Lucia Kings by three wickets in the final last year. They are currently the defending champions in the Caribbean Premier League.

Put to ball first, the Patriots rode on the efforts from Fawad Ahmed (2/32) and Naseem Shah (2/26) to restrict St Lucia Kings to a score of 159/7 in 20 overs. Dominic Drakes (48*) and Joshua Da Silva (37) then led the run-chase for the Patriots and helped them win the title.
