Founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the biggest and most famous T20 leagues in the world. Tentatively held in the month of April and May each year, the IPL generates huge revenue through massive television viewership.
There have been 13 editions of the league so far, with the IPL 2021 edition indefinitely suspended due to the Covid19 pandemic. The 2020 edition was moved to the UAE for the same reason and was a huge success.
Eight IPL teams participate in the tournament, but the BCCI is looking to add two more teams from the 2022 edition. It can be noted that four teams – Gujarat Lions (2016 – 2017), Deccan Chargers (2008 – 2012), Rising Pune Supergiant (2015-2017) and Pune Warriors (2010-2013) were once a part of the league but later dissolved.
Here we look at the eight teams which currently participate in the cash-rich league.

1. Chennai Super Kings
Founded in 2008, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and play their home games at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium. The team is owned by Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd and India cements is the major stakeholder.
CSK have won the IPL title thrice – in 2010, 2011 and 2018 – and have also made the most appearances in the playoffs (10) and in the final (8). They have the highest win percentage of matches among all teams (59.83%) and have also won the Champions League T20 in 2010 and 2014.
It can be noted that the team was suspended for two years from 2016-18 as their owners were allegedly involved in a betting case. In 2019, the franchise was adjudged the most valuable brand at US$65 million by Brand Finance.
Their highest run-getter is Suresh Raina with 4527 runs from 160 innings, while their top wicket-taker is Dwayne Bravo with 153 wickets from 92 games.
CSK is currently captained by MS Dhoni and coached by Stephen Fleming. They have noted players such as Faf du Plessis, Imran Tahir, and Ravindra Jadeja in their ranks.
2. Mumbai Indians
Founded in 2008, the Mumbai Indians are based in Mumbai, Maharashtra and play their home games at the Wankhede Stadium. The team is owned by Reliance Industries and is currently the most successful team in the league.
In 2011, they won the Champions League T20, followed by their first IPL title in 2013 and a second Champions League title that same year. They have won four more IPL trophies in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Mumbai Indians are one of the most consistent sides in the IPL, having made it to the playoffs nine out of 13 times. They have the second-best win percentage of 59.11, behind CSK (59.83). Their highest team total remains 223/6 against KXIP at their home ground.
Mumbai Indians are currently captained by Rohit Sharma and coached by Mahela Jayawardene. While Sharma is their top run-scorer, Lasith Malinga is their top wicket-taker.

3. Kolkata Knight Riders
The Kolkata Knight Riders represent Kolkata in the IPL. The franchise is co-owned by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh, actress Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta. The home ground of the Knights is the iconic Eden Gardens. The franchise enjoys a lot of attention because of being associated with the Bollywood superstar.
KKR have won the league twice, in 2012 and 2014 and have made it to the playoffs six times in 13 seasons including winning two Champions League titles. However, they have not managed to reach the final since 2014. Apart from other records, KKR have the most consecutive wins overall. They won nine matches on a trot in 2014 and another 10 at the start of the 2015 season.
The team is currently captained by Eoin Morgan and coach Brendon McCullum. Former captain Gautam Gambhir is their highest run-scorer (3035) and Sunil Narine their highest wicket-taker (127).
4. Sunrisers Hyderabad
The Sunrisers Hyderabad was founded in 2012 after the Hyderabad-based Deccan Chargers were terminated by the IPL. The franchise is owned by Kalanithi Maran of the SUN Group. They made it to the playoffs in their first season but couldn’t qualify for the top 4 the next two years. However, they lifted their first trophy in 2016 and have qualified for the playoffs every year since. SRH are third in the list of win percentages, winning 53.62 percent of their matches.
David Warner is their highest run-scorer. The Aussie opener has scored 3819 runs from 87 innings for at a staggering average of 52.31. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, with 112 wickets, is their highest wicket-taker.
The team is currently captained by David Warner and coached by Trevor Bayliss.
5. Delhi Capitals
The Delhi Capitals are based out of New Delhi and jointly owned by the GMR Group and the JSW Group. Their home ground is the Arun Jaitley Stadium and they appeared in their first IPL final in 2020 but lost to Mumbai Indians.
Delhi have the record for the joint-most number of consecutivedefeats in a season – nine losses in 2014. They share the record with the defunct Pune side.
Shreyas Iyer leads their run-scoring chart with 2200 runs from 79 innings and Amit Mishra has topped the wicket-taking chart with 100 wickets from 95 games.
The team is presently captained by Shreyas Iyer and coached by Ricky Ponting.

6. Punjab Kings
The Punjab Kings, earlier known as Kings XI Punjab, are based in Mohali and play their home games at the PCA stadium. The franchise is jointly owned by Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia, Mohit Burman and Karan Paul.
Punjab have not won a single IPL title so far and the closest that they came to a title was in 2014, when they lost the final to KKR. They have not been able to make it out of the group stage for 11 out of the 13 seasons.
Shaun Marsh is the highest run-getter for the franchise with 2477 runs from 69 innings and Piyush Chawla is the highest wicket-taker with 84 wickets from 87 games.
The team is currently captained by KL Rahul and coached by Anil Kumble and has players like Chris Gayle, Jhye Richardson and Mayank Agarwal in its ranks.
7. Royal Challengers Bangalore
Royal Challengers Bangalore is the Bangalore based cricket franchise of the IPL. The team is owned by United Spirits Limited, a Diageo Group company and has not won any titles so far but finished as the runners-up thrice.
RCB hold the record for highest and lowest scores in the league. Their highest total 263/5 vs Pune Warriors in 2013, and lowest was 49 vs KKR in 2017.
RCB’s highest run-getter is Virat Kohli with 5878 runs from 184 innings and the highest wicket-taker is Yuzvendra Chahal with 121 wickets from 97 innings. Ab de Villiers, Kyle Jamieson, Moeen Ali and Glenn Maxwell are some of the names which will turn out for RCB in IPL 2021.
The team is currently captained by Kohli and coached by Simon Katich.

8. Rajasthan Royals
The Rajasthan Royals are based in Jaipur and play their home games at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. The franchise is currently owned and chaired by Manoj Badale, while the other investors are Lachlan Murdoch, Aditya S Chellaram, and Suresh Chellaram.
The Royals won the inaugural season of 2008 under Shane Warne, but have not been able to repeat the feat. They have made it to playoffs only thrice in the next 10 years, barring the two years in 2016 and 2017 when they were banned.
With 2810 runs from 93 innings, Ajinkya Rahane is their top run-scorer and Siddharth Trivedi with 65 wickets from 75 innings is their top wicket-taker.
The team is currently captained by Sanju Samson and coached by Paddy Upton.
