Rohit Sharma – The Hitman

Rohit Sharma IPL Fantasy

Talent, Elegance and Timing – Those are the three words that have stuck with Rohit Sharma from the time he arrived into the cricketing circles.

Making his T20I debut in the inaugural edition of the World T20 in 2007, Rohit played crucial roles for the Men in Blue in the three innings that he played in the tournament. With scores of 50*(40), 8*(5) and a clutch 16-ball 30* in the finals against Pakistan, Rohit had shown his caliber and what lies beneath.

However, the journey wasn’t smooth for Mumbaikar in the international arena in the first half of his career from 2007-12. It is only from the year 2013 that his career blossomed across formats and he has been churning runs after runs to this date.

The decision to promote him as an opener in limited-overs by the then skipper MS Dhoni proved to be the turning point in his career.

Capitalizing on the opportunity, Rohit had a decent run with the willow in the 2013 Champions Trophy. Later in the year, he managed to register his first double hundred, 209 runs off 168 deliveries against Australia. His thirst for another megaton got him to a score of 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014, which to date remains the highest score by a cricketer in 50-overs cricket, and an unbeaten 208* once again against Sri Lanka this time in 2018.

He’s the only cricketer with most double tons in ODIs (3) and most hundreds in T20 Internationals (4). Perhaps the only cricketer in world cricket at present whom the cricket fanatics expect a double hundred each time he gets past the 100-run tally and a hundred when he speeds past the fifty run mark in the shortest format.

Rohit had a dream debut in Test cricket, scoring hundreds in back to back matches. However, it took some time to stamp his authority in the whites. The opportunity for the same arrived when he opened for the first time in a Test match against South Africa in 2019, clobbering 176 and 127 in Visakhapatnam. A magnificent knock of 212 in Ranchi to wind up the 3-match series with over 500 runs and an average of 130-plus. Since then, he has been a vital cog at the opening spot in the whites, and the same was visible yet again in the home conditions during the 4-match Test series against England in 2021, where he stood tall on tracks that were troubling the batters at every nook and corner. Regardless of the tricky conditions, the opener managed to provide starts on must-win occasions and finished with 345 runs in 4 outings, including a hundred and fifty to his name.

Rohit has been a mammoth run-getter in the Indian T20 league. The 5-time IPL winning captain is only the fifth player alongside Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan and David Warner with over 5000 runs to his name and is the fourth-highest run-scorer in the tournament. He led the batting charts for Mumbai in the 2013 edition, aggregating 538 runs with 4 fifties, and who can forget his sizzling knocks in the finals of 2015 and 2020, where he scored 50(26) and 68 (51) respectively, to guide his side to victory. And one cannot forget Hitman’s love affair with the iconic Eden Gardens in the cash-rich league, where he averages 46.66 in 13 matches with 3 fifties and a hundred.

When it comes to captaincy in the shortest format, one could say that Rohit has carved a highly daunting resume for himself. In the Indian T20 League, he has been instrumental in leading Mumbai to titular wins from the time he took on the mantle in 2013, followed by wins in 2015, 2017, 2019, and successfully defending the title in 2020. The 33-year-old has a win percentage of 60.34, with 70 wins in 116 matches. As far as his international achievements are concerned, he has won 8 out of 10 times as a captain in the ODIs, and 15 times out of 19 instances in the T20 Internationals.
