IPL 2020, Match 1: MI vs CSK – Ambati Rayudu’s fiery 71 helps CSK draw the first blood

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) started the IPL 2020 on a winning note as they sealed a five-wicket conquest over Mumbai Indians.

Batting first, Mumbai Indians had just the start they would have wanted. The opening duo of Quinton de Kock and skipper Rohit Sharma stitched a healthy partnership as they posted 46 runs on board; which eventually turned out to be the highest partnership in Mumbai Indians’ tent by end of their innings.

Rohit Sharma started the IPL 2020 with a four off the very first ball of Deepak Chahar’s outswinger. His partner in crime, Quinton de Kock, then took on the hitting role as he smashed Chahar and then Protea pacer Lungi Ngidi as and marched his way into 30s.

It wasn’t until long when MS Dhoni brought in Piyush Chawla and dismissed Hitman on merely 12 runs, followed by de Kock’s departure to a Sam Curran’s delivery.

The situation intensified for Mumbai Indians as they needed another partnership in the middle to get to a competitive score.

Saurabh Tiwary and Suryakumar Yadav took on the onus of building an innings and added  44 runs for the third wicket, with the former smashing out the spinners for boundaries across the fence.

Once again, opposition skipper MS Doni roped in Deepak Chahar for his services who then got the better of Suryakumar Yadav.

Though Ravindra Jadeja was pretty expensive in the first three overs, he managed to bounce back in the end by grabbing the wickets of Saurabh Tiwary (42) and Hardik Pandya (14).

There was still some firepower left in the Mumbai Indians tent, considering Kieron Pollard and Krunal Pandya could go bonkers in the end, but, Lungi Ngidi managed to outplay both of them along with Jamis Pattinson to end with figures of 3/38. Leggie Piyush Chawla (1/21) was the most economical, followed by Sam Curran (1/28) and Deepak Chahar (2/32).

Chasing 163, CSK got off to a blurry start as they lost the key wickets of openers Murali Vijay (1) and Shane Watson (4). However, Faf du Plessis and Ambati Rayudu then laid a concrete foundation for the Men in Yellow, adding 115 runs for the third wicket stand.

Rayudu took on the mantle of dishing out the boundaries as he steered his way to 71 off 46 deliveries with 6 fours and as many sixes. Though Rahul Chahar managed to get the better of Rayudu, one could say that the damage was already done.

Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran played explosive cameos which later coupled with the gritty knock played by Faf du Plessis (58*), comprising two back to back fours in the last over, helped the Men in Yellow chase down the total.
