The Indian Premier League has finished its 15th season in the most blockbuster way possible. Gujarat Titans, a side which walked into the tournament with zero expectations to do well, ended up lifting the trophy in their first-ever season, defeating Rajasthan Royals in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Hardik Pandya produced a sensational all-round performance in the finale to take Gujarat over the line, and was rightly named player of the match in this all-important contest.
With the tournament turning into a 10-team affair, the number of Indian stars who have come up makes the season even more special. Right from the most valuable player to the best emerging player of the season, there were some top contenders, but some individuals managed to stand out and eventually grabbed the awards.

Most Valuable Player/Player of the season
Who else, but the English dynamite Jos Buttler to collect the biggest of all the individual prizes? The 31-year-old lit the Indian Premier League with his fireworks this season, and was rightfully named the player of the tournament for his extravagant batting performances. As it turned out, it wasn’t the only award he was picking up on the day.
Orange Cap
With a mind-boggling 863-run campaign, Jos Buttler came very close to breaking Virat Kohli’s record for the most runs scored in a single season (973). Although he fell 110 runs short, he became only the third cricketer to score 800 or more runs in a single season, after Virat Kohli and David Warner (both did it in 2016).
Purple Cap
There was a tight contest between Yuzvendra Chahal and Wanindu Hasaranga for the Purple Cap in IPL 2022, but as it turns out, Chahal managed to trump his former RCB teammate by 1 wicket. Chahal returned with 27 wickets this season, the most by a spinner in a single season. He also picked up a hat-trick against Kolkata Knight Riders, capping off an absolutely stunning campaign for the leggie.
Emerging player of the season
There was an exuberant Tilak Varma who did so well for Mumbai Indians this season, and the likes of Mohsin Khan, who produced breathtaking spells with the ball. But the Emerging Player of the season award eventually went to one of India’s most talked about fast bowlers, Umran Malik. The 22-year-old picked up 22 wickets this season keeping him in contention for the purple cap. He also received his maiden India call-up after impressing the selectors.
Let’s crack it sixes award
The ‘Let’s Crack It” sixes award for IPL 2022 was presented to the player with the most sixes hit in this tournament, and unsurprisingly, Jos Buttler won the award. The superstar batter hit a whopping 45 sixes this edition, smoking the ball as clean as a whistle. Liam Livingstone, Andre Russell and KL Rahul were the other players who hit 30 or more sixes.
On the go fours award
Jos Buttler had his name written nearly on every award, and the award for the most fours hit in the 2022 edition also went to him. With 83 fours to his credit, Jos Buttler was in the form of his life and kept producing a quality start with the bat for his side.
Super striker of the season
The award for the best striker of the season went to Dinesh Karthik from Royal Challengers Bangalore, for finishing the tournament with a strike rate of 183.33. No other player managed to do a better job after facing 50 or more deliveries, thus making the 37-year-old a worthy winner of this big prize.
Game changer of the season
Jos Buttler had to come up on the stage to collect awards more times than he could think of. This time, he was summoned to pick up the “Game changer of the season” award. There were plenty of instances throughout the tournament when Jos Buttler carried the burden of their batting line up with ease, despite getting off to slow starts, and there clearly was no debate to this pick.
Powerplayer of the season
The award for the best performer in powerplay throughout the tournament was handed to the same man again, Jos Buttler. Although it could be argued that his best performances may or may not have merited him the tag “powerplayer of the season”, Jos Buttler did make the best of these field-restricted overs, playing out some delightful knocks banking on these good starts.
Fastest delivery of the season
Umran Malik nearly had this award in his grasp, until the final day had come. Lockie Ferguson, who went toe-to-toe throughout the season with Umran Malik in this speedsters’ battle, managed to fire in a blockhole during the final, which travelled at 157.3 kph, which wasn’t just the fastest delivery of the season, but also the joint-fastest in IPL history alongside Shaun Tait.
Catch of the season
Another award which grabs a lot of attention right from the beginning of the Indian Premier League, there were many valiant contenders for the catch of the season. But it eventually went to Evin Lewis, for his stunning one-handed, diving grab to dismiss Rinku Singh in the final group stage game for Lucknow Super Giants. That catch meant that the Kolkata Knight Riders campaign finished with a painful defeat.
Fairplay award
Fairplay award of the tournament was handed to both the finalists, Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals, for upholding the ethics of the game throughout the season. Both these spectacularly-led teams made a great impression on the fans and experts, and it comes as no surprise that they were jointly given this award.
