The inception of the Indian Super League has seen a rapid rise in Indian Football. The ISL 2021-22 season was held in Goa and Bartholomew Ogbeche being adjudged the ISL best player as he ended the campaign with 18 goals.
The tournament was conceptualised back in 2013, and the first edition was held in 2014, comprising eight teams only. In the present scenario, each club has to play other clubs twice home and away in a season and the winner of the league phase is given the League Winners Shield trophy. The Top four teams compete among themselves in the playoffs and the winner in the final takes the title.
ATK won the inaugural championship, and they went on to win the ISL title three times. Chennaiyin FC has two titles, while Bengaluru FC, Mumbai City and Hyderabad FC have one title each.

Bartholomew Ogbeche
Bartholomew Ogbeche remains the highest scorer in the history of the Indian Super League as he has the most number of goals scored in his tally. The 37 years old has played for a number of clubs and has scored 51 goals in the proceedings. He lifted the ISL title this season having scored in the competition 18 times for Hyderabad FC.
NorthEast United FC was Ogbeche’s first club and he netted 12 goals for them in his maiden season. He joined Kerala Blasters and bettered his goal scoring record as he registered 15 goals for them. In the last season, he played for Mumbai Indians and also led them to their first ISL trophy.
Sunil Chhetri
The Indian football maestro is the sole Indian footballer on this list. When it comes to the top tier, Sunil played only for two clubs Mumbai City and Bengaluru FC. He shot to fame with his goal scoring antics for Bengaluru and he even lifted the title back in 2019 with the South Indian giants.
He is still going strong at the age of 37 and is keen to extend his playing career by a few more years.
Ferran Corominas
Ferran Corominas, fondly known as Coro is the third entrant on this list. The Spanish forward only donned the FC Goa jersey in his Indian Super League journey and scored 48 goals in the process.
He arrived in India in the 2017-18 season and won two golden boots in back to back seasons. He spent three seasons in India but showed his class on Indian soil. He had 48 goals and 16 assists to his name in his brief stint with the Goan club.
Roy Krishna
Roy Krishna has been one of the most fierce goal poachers the ISL has ever seen. He took very little time to get acclimatised to the Indian conditions and has been banging goals after goals since his arrival.
He has appeared 60 times in the competition for ATK and ATK Mohun Bagan and has been involved in 54 goal contributions. He led ATK to the 2019-20 ISL title and also guided them to the final in the 2020-21 season when they lost to Mumbai City in the final.
Marcelinho
Marcelinho is one of the ISL veterans and he appeared for FC Pune City, Odisha FC, Hyderabad FC, NorthEast United, ATK Mohun Bagan in the Indian Super League. He played for Delhi Dynamos back in 2016 and racked up 10 goals that term.
He played for NorthEast United in the 2021-22 season on loan from Rajasthan United.
