What is KXIP full form in IPL?

The cricketing fraternity celebrates the festival named the Indian Premier League (IPL) for a couple of months every year. The cash-rich Indian T20 extravaganza has become a vital part of the cricket calendar. Every cricketer across the globe wants to participate in the IPL and a lot of players have even admitted that playing in the IPL has made them better cricketers. Thus, there is absolutely no doubt that the IPL is arguably the best T20 league around the world.

It currently consists of eight teams and KXIP is one of them. The Mohali-based franchise has been around for 14 years now but they are one of the only three teams among the current ones to have not won the IPL title even once. They were named to PBKS earlier this year.

Hence, here, we look at the big question of what is the full form of KXIP or rather, even PBKS? We also take a look a few more details about the Punjab franchise.

The full form of KXIP in the IPL is Kings XI Punjab. They were renamed to PBKS this year and the full form of PBKS in the IPL is Punjab Kings. Currently, they are led by India international and superstar KL Rahul. They have some big names like Chris Gayle, Mayank Agarwal and Mohammed Shami in their ranks.

They haven’t been at their best and among the current eight teams, Punjab Kings are one of the only three sides to have never won the IPL title. Moreover, they have reached the playoffs only twice, which is the least by any side in the IPL at the moment.

Kings XI Punjab who are now known as the Punjab Kings were formed in 2008. They are owned by a host of stakeholders – Dabur group’s Mohit Burman (46%), Wadia group’s Ness Wadia (23%), Preity Zinta (23%), and Dey & Dey Group’s Saptarshi Dey (minor stake). The home ground for Punjab Kings is the PCA Stadium in Mohali.

Kings XI Punjab in IPL over the years

IPL 2008: Kings XI Punjab started off with a bang. They finished the league stages on the second position as they won 10 out of the 14 games. However, the Yuvraj Singh-led lost in the semi-final against Chennai Super Kings.

IPL 2009: After a promising debut season where they had a semi-final finish, Kings XI Punjab narrowly missed out on the top four spot. They finished fifth and fell behind on net run rate as they won seven games and lost as many.

IPL 2010: 2010 was one of the worst years for Kings XI Punjab. They could muster just four wins from 14 games and finished with the wooden spoon.

IPL 2011: In 2011, Kings XI Punjab roped in Adam Gilchrist as captain but the inconsistency continued. They ended the league stages with seven wins and as many losses and finished fifth on the points table.

IPL 2012: Kings XI Punjab couldn’t force their way into the playoffs for the fourth season in a row as they once again had a middling run in 2012. They won eight games and lost eight as well which saw them end at the sixth spot.

IPL 2013: 2013 was no different to 2012. It was another season where Kings XI Punjab couldn’t gain momentum and finished with eight wins and as many losses in the league phase. They once again finished at the sixth spot.

IPL 2014: There is absolutely no doubt that 2014 was Kings XI Punjab’s best season in the history of the IPL. The George Bailey-led side had a phenomenal run where they topped the league stages and reached the final. However, they went down against Kolkata Knight Riders in a nail-biting game.

IPL 2015: After the high in 2014, Kings XI Punjab couldn’t back it up in the following year. They were poor and could manage a mere three wins from 14 games in the entire season, finishing at the bottom spot.

IPL 2016: 2016 wasn’t too different from 2015. Kings XI Punjab had just one more win (total four) in the league stages and they once again ended with the wooden spoon.

IPL 2017: Kings XI Punjab did improve in the 2017 season. They finished fifth for the third time in 10 years and missed out on the playoffs berth once again. They won seven games and lost as many.

IPL 2018: In 2018, Kings XI Punjab had a rousing start and won five out of their first six games. However, their form slipped and they crashed to a No. 7 finish as they won just one more game from their last eight.

IPL 2019: 2019 was similar to 2018. Kings XI Punjab had another solid start as they won four out of their first six games. But their form dipped in the second half and they had a sixth spot finish.

IPL 2020: Kings XI Punjab once again finished sixth in 2020. This time they had a poor start as they lost six out of their first six games. They did try to rally and gather momentum in the second half but it was too steep a mountain to climb. The KL Rahul-led side won six and lost eight that season.

IPL 2021: 2021 was the year when Kings XI Punjab was renamed to Punjab Kings. Only half the season has been played and it has been another inconsistent run. They have three wins and five losses so far.

Conclusion

Kings XI Punjab or rather, Punjab Kings are one of the perennial under-achievers in the IPL. They have lost as many as 106 matches in the IPL which is the second-most in the history of the league. In fact, their win percentage of 45.45% is the lowest among the current teams.
