MI wanted to trade Rashid Khan two years ago: Former SRH coach Tom Moody

Riding on the stupendous performances from skipper Rohit Sharma (68), Ishan Kishan (33*) and Trent Boult (3/30), Mumbai Indians (MI) registered their fifth IPL win against Delhi Capitals (DC) by 5-wickets in Dubai on Tuesday. This was their first win in an even year and now, they are only the second franchise other than Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to have successfully defended their title in IPL.

Mumbai Indians’ batting has played a pivotal role in laying a winning foundation on numerous occasions this season.

The top-order trio comprising Ishan Kishan (516), Quinton de Kock (503), and Suryakumar Yadav (480) ended up among the top 10 leading run-getters in the tournament.

In the bowling department, pacer Jasprit Bumrah (27 wickets) was the highest wicket-taker for MI and finished at the second in overall, followed by his partner in crime Trent Boult with 25 scalpings to his name.

Over the years, one of the core reasons behind MI’s success has been the off-season preparation involving scouting and player trades.

Former SRH coach Tom Moody spoke about how Mumbai Indians once approached them for a trade involving ace Afghanistan spinner – Rashid Khan.

“I remember them (MI), it may have been two years ago, requesting a trade for Rashid Khan. I meant come on, no other franchise had the gumption or bravado to be able to knock on the door and say look we would like to get a trade for Rashid Khan – that’s like okay, I am sure you do so, do the rest of the world,” said Moody in a recent video of ESPNcricinfo.

Mumbai Indians are the most active in trade opportunities: Tom Moody

Moody lauded MI’s efforts in picking the best set of cricketers for their lineups. He pointed out that Mumbai Indians are always on the lookout for the best players and they do not shy away from knocking on other franchise’s doors for trades. That, as a result, has been the cause of success over the years.

“What I have found through my experience over the last few years in the IPL is that Mumbai Indians is probably one of the most active teams in regards to seeking trade opportunities.

They are not afraid to knock on your doors and ask for ridiculous. And they keep knocking on the door, and if they keep doing that to seven other franchises, they are eventually going to get what they want,” said Moody in conclusion.
