Virat Kohli

Former India captain Virat Kohli is right at the top of the list of most half-centuries in the T20 World Cup. Kohli has scored 14 of them. Not just that, Kohli is also the highest run-scorer in T20 World Cup history with 1141 runs in 25 innings at an average of 81.50 and strike rate of 131.30.

In his first T20 World Cup in 2012, Kohli scored 185 runs in five innings at an average of 46.25 and a strike rate of 122.51. This includes two half-centuries. In the 2014 edition of the ICC tournament, Kohli topped the runs chart with 319 runs in six innings. Kohli scored as many as four half-centuries in that edition of the tournament. Two years later, in the 2016 edition of the tournament, the run-machine was the second-highest run-scorer with 273 runs in five innings at an average of 136.50 and a strike rate of 146.77. The stats include three half-centuries and his best knock of 89*. But the runs dried up in the 2021 edition of the tournament, and for the first time, Kohli was not in the top 10, or even the top 20 run-scorers. Apart from a half-century against Pakistan, his remaining four knocks in the 2021 edition were in single digits.

Rohit Sharma

Current India captain Rohit Sharma has scored the second most fifties in the T20 World Cup – 9. Sharma has nine fifties in 36 innings. His first fifty came in the inaugural edition of the tournament. But that season, apart from the sole fifty, Sharma’s performances were largely unimpressive. In the 2009 edition, Rohit Sharma amassed 131 runs in five innings at an average of 32.75 and a strike rate of 122.42. That season too, he scored a half-century. He scored yet another fifty in the next edition of the tournament in 2012. But in 2014, Sharma was the fourth-highest run-scorer with 200 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 123.45. That season, he scored two half-centuries. The opening batsman was not able to score any half centuries in 2016, but scored two of them in 2021.

Chris Gayle

With seven half centuries, Chris Gayle is third on the list. One of the most fearless T20 batters, Gayle also has two centuries under his belt in the tournament. In the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2007, Gayle scored 117 runs in just two matches at an average of 58.50 and a strike rate of almost 200. The first of his two T20 World Cup centuries also came that season. Against South Africa, Gayle scored one of the best knocks seen in T20 internationals. Opening the batting for the West Indies, Gayle smashed 117 runs off just 57 balls at a strike rate of over 205. His knock was laced with seven boundaries and 10 maximums, but came in a losing cause as the Proteas comfortably chased down the target of 205 runs.

Gayle’s second century in the World Cup came in the 2016 edition of the tournament against England. He remained unbeaten on 100 off 48 balls to help West Indies chase down a target of 183 in 18.1 overs. But that century was the only significant knock that came off Gayle’s bat in the 2016 T20 World Cup. Overall that season, he managed just 113 runs in four innings.

Mahela Jayawardene

Mahela Jayawardene, who played in every edition of the tournament from 2007 to 2014, scored 1016 runs across 31 innings, including six half-centuries. Jayawardene was Sri Lanka’s highest run-scorer in the 2007 T20 World Cup with 159 runs in five innings, including one half-century. In the next edition in 2009, Jayawardene scored 154 runs in seven innings including one fifty. The 2012 edition was Jayawardene’s best – he was the second highest run-scorer that season with 243 runs across seven innings including one fifty. And he scored one more fifty in his last edition, which was in 2014. The former Sri Lanka captain retired from T20Is at the end of the 2014 World Cup. He finished his T20I career with 1493 runs in 55 matches at an average of 31.76 and a strike rate of 133.18. In all, the right-hander scored nine half-centuries in the game’s shortest format.

David Warner

Australia’s David Warner, too, has scored six half-centuries in T20 World Cups. Three of those came in the 2021 edition of the tournament, in which Warner slammed 289 runs in seven innings at an average of 48.16 and a strike rate of 146.70. Warner’s form was one of the primary reasons behind Australia winning the trophy last year.
