Harshal Patel holds the top spot jointly with Dwayne Bravo in the list of most wickets in one IPL season. He picked up 32 wickets in the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League while playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. He played 15 matches and took 32 wickets in the season at an average of 14.34 and an economy of 8.14. Thanks to his bowling effort, RCB made it to the playoffs but couldn’t make it to the finals and eventually win the trophy. He also picked up a hattrick during the season against Mumbai Indians picking up the wickets of Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard and Rahul Chahar.
Dwayne Brave – 32 wickets | IPL 2013
Dwayne Bravo shares the top position in the list of most wickets in one IPL season with Harshal Patel. Perhaps, the Caribbean all-rounder was the first player to reach the 32-wicket mark in a single IPL season. He achieved the feat in the 2013 season of the Indian Premier League while playing for the Chennai Super Kings. He played 18 matches for the Men in Yellow and delivered in almost every game for CSK while bowling 63 overs at an average of 15.53. He performed incredibly well in the final as well against Mumbai Indians picking up four wickets but unfortunately, CSK lost the match.
Kagiso Rabada – 30 wickets | IPL 2020
Kagiso Rabada from South Africa is in the third position in this list of most wickets in a single season of the Indian Premier League. He accounted for 30 scalps in the 2020 edition of the cash-rich league that was played in the UAE behind closed doors. Rabada achieved the feat while playing for the Delhi Capitals who qualified for the final only to lose to Mumbai Indians. Rabada scalped 30 wickets in IPL 2020 playing 17 matches at an average of 18.26 and an economy of 8.34.
Lasith Malinga – 28 wickets | IPL 2011
Lasith Malinga has been the best performer of the IPL over the years and this list is incomplete without him. He holds the fourth position having picked 28 wickets in the IPL 2011 season in 16 matches at an average of 13.39 at an incredible economy of 5.95. Malinga played for Mumbai Indians only in IPL since 2009 when he made his IPL debut. The last ball of his IPL career turned out to be a heart-clinching thriller in the final of IPL 2019 where he dismissed Shardul Thakur as MI won their fourth trophy by just 1 run.
James Faulkner – 28 wickets | IPL 2013
James Faulkner of Australia is in fifth place on this list as he dominated the proceedings during the 2013 edition of the Indian Premier League. He played for Rajasthan Royals and accounted for 28 scalps in 16 matches at a brilliant average of 15.25 and an economy of 6.75. He didn’t win the purple cap with Bravo picking 32 wickets but Faulkner stood second thanks to an exceptional bowling show in the entire season.
Mohammad Shami – 28 wickets | IPL 2023
Mohammad Shami was the leading wicket-taker in IPL 2023. In 16 matches, he took 28 wickets at an average of 17.60 and a strike rate of 13.28. The Gujarat Titans pacer played a key role in his side reaching the final, where they eventually lost to Chennai Super Kings.
Jasprit Bumrah – 27 wickets | IPL 2020
Jasprit Bumrah of Mumbai Indians was at the top of his bowling mark in the entire IPL 2020 season. He was one of the reasons why MI became only the second team ever to defend the IPL title in its history. Bumrah picked up a whopping 27 wickets in 15 matches of the season played in the UAE at an average of 14.96 and an economy of 6.73. Bumrah was simply superb in the season as he sent down 60 overs to achieve the feat successfully.

Along with Shami, spin sensation Rashid Khan also played a big role in Gujarat reaching the final of IPL 2023. Rashid ended the season with 27 wickets from 16 matches at an average of 18.80 and a strike rate of 14.22.
Yuzvendra Chahal – 27 wickets | IPL 2022
Yuzvendra Chahal was at his best in IPL 2022 as he picked up 27 wickets helping Rajasthan Royals make it to the final of the season. He had a point to prove after missing out on India’s T20 World Cup squad and also after RCB released him ahead of the mega auction. Chahal played 17 matches to pick 27 wickets at an average of 19.51 and an economy of 7.75 including a four-fer and five-wicket haul to his name.
Dwayne Bravo – 26 wickets | IPL 2015
Dwayne Bravo yet again features in this list of most wickets in a single IPL season. In IPL 2015, the Caribbean legendary cricketer accounted for 25 scalps after playing in 17 matches in total. He bowled in 16 innings out of those sending down 52.2 overs and picking 25 wickets at an average of 16.38 and an economy of 8.14. His strike rate of 12 was one of the best in the history of IPL as well. His efforts helped CSK put on a brilliant show yet again in the IPL as they got close to winning yet another title.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar – 26 wickets | IPL 2017
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is one of the best swing bowlers India has ever produced in its rich cricketing history. No wonder he was one of the architects of Sunrisers Hyderabad and is still playing for the franchise. He features in the ninth position in the list of most wickets in a single IPL season. Bhuvneshwar Kumar played 14 matches and picked up 26 wickets while sending down 52.2 overs at an average of 14.19 and an economy of 7.05. He also picked up a five-wicket haul in the season and remains one of the best-ever bowlers to play the IPL in its 16-year history. It remains to be seen if Bhuvi tops the charts yet again in the upcoming editions.
