So, if you are intrigued by the variations of the rummy game, here’s a new one for you to learn.

Ranking

The highest rank is assigned to the King and the lowest rank to the Ace. All others are given rank in this order K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, A. In many forms of Rummy, Ace is ranked higher than the king, but not in this one.

Dealer

First, the dealer is chosen. Once chosen, he deals one card at a time on the table face down, starting from the left-most player.

The Deal

The dealer deals seven cards to each player, irrespective of the number of players playing, unlike regular rummy where cards are distributed according to the number of players. The top card from the stockpile is turned face up. It becomes the discard pile and is placed next to the stock.

If only two players are playing, the next round deal passes to the winner of each hand, and with more than two players, the deal passes to the left-most player.

Objective

For winning the game the player needs to get rid of their hand. In order to do so, the player has to make matched set of a group consisting of three or more cards (i.e. set of three different Q), or 3 playing cards or more in a sequence of the same suit (i.e. a set consisting 3, 4, 5 of hearts). When a player declares a meld (matched set), they need to lay these sets face up on the table and the winner collects.

How to Play Queen City?

Much like the regular rummy game, at the beginning of the game, the player left to the dealer starts the game by picking either a single card from the stock or discard pile, adding the drawn to their remaining hand. If a certain player cannot or don’t want to lay down a meld (matched set), he has to lay down any one card from their hand, face-up, onto the discard pile.

Note – If they had picked the card from the discard pile, then they can not discard the same card on the same flip.

Stockpile

When the stockpile is consumed, then the subsequent player gets an option to choose the top card from the discard pile. If the player refuses, new stock will be made from the discard pile by making the last card of it the new discard pile and flipping it upside down to make the stockpile (with or without shuffling).

Going out or Rummy

To win this game, the players must get rid of all the cards, they hold in their hands. Here, the players let go of their hand unless they can’t get rid of all of them in one go. If all of the remaining cards of players are matched, then the player can lay all of them down without needing to discard any card on their last turn. The player who have no cards to discard wins and the game ends.

When to Meld?

The player can’t meld until they can fully go rummy (no partial melds or matched sets are allowed). Players can meld even seven or eight cards together in groups, when the player goes out, they don’t have to discard at the end (unless it helps them to get out).

Scoring

The first one to go out is the winner of the match and the winner collects the point value of his/her hand times the number of opponents. The winning player can not collect the points from the opponents’ hands and the value points are never paid in double. In many other forms, point value from only the opponents’ hands is counted.
