Rishabh Pant is a major asset for Delhi Capitals; has vastly improved his game: Brian Lara

Rishabh Pant is touted by many as the successor to Indian legend MS Dhoni in the Indian cricket team. He is one of the most explosive cricketers in the shortest format who could turn the odds in his favor. It doesn’t take him many deliveries to get the flow going and once set, he could be the biggest match-winner for his team in a given contest.

Pant’s performances have played a key role in the Delhi Capitals’ success in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) underway in UAE. In 5 matches, the wicket-keeper batsman has scored 171 runs at an average and strike rate of 42.75 and 139.02 respectively, with 5 scalpings when behind the stumps.

Delhi Capitals, who are presently occupying the second spot in the points table with 4 wins in 5 matches, will be hoping for a majestic season for the young cricketer as it would cement their chances of making it to the playoffs. Off late, one of the positives around Pant is the maturity he has shown as a cricketer with his approach and shot selections.

Rishabh Pant’s scoring charts look very impressive: Brian Lara

Former West Indies cricketer Brian Lara lauded the Delhi cricketer and felt that Rishabh Pant has improved his game immensely over the years. The Caribbean legend pointed out that Pant is now more balanced, his scoring areas look impressive, and that he can score in all parts of the ground.

“I think he is a major asset for the Delhi Capitals, but today he has also vastly improved his game. I am talking about his batting and the improvements he made in that department. What is immediately noticeable is his propensity to try and get everything to the leg-side. Also, look at his run-scoring chart and that’s quite proof of that fascination he has with the on-side. I think he has come to the realization that this is not working and he went away and worked on improving his off-side play,” said Lara on the Star Sports show Cricket Live.

He added “Now look at the changes he made. Now he has the ability to score runs in all parts of the ground. His scoring charts are looking impressive, and yes, more worry for the bowlers.

He is now very well balanced and he is looking to score in key areas that he is not accustomed to scoring – over extra cover, over point, in front of point, he is not falling over to the off-side to create shots on the leg side. That is a vast improvement that he has made, which is obviously going to help his all-around batting. I believe this young lad has a long long way to go.”

In IPL, Pant has had enormous success as a wicket-keeper batsman for the Delhi-based franchise. He has amassed over 1900 runs, averages 36.67, strikes at 160-plus, and has a century and 11 fifties to his name. With the gloves, Pant has affected 51 dismissals comprising 40 catches and 11 stumpings.

The southpaw will be next seen in action versus Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Sharjah on Friday.
