IPL 2020: Rohit Sharma reveals what he learned from Ricky Ponting after becoming Mumbai Indians captain

Rohit Sharma is arguably one of the best skippers in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and one of the finest cricketers in the history of T20 cricket.

He has led the Mumbai Indians to four titular wins in IPL and it could possibly be said that the decision to appoint him as the captain worked wonders for him both as a captain and as a batsman.

Talking about his journey and the successes as a player with Mumbai Indians, the ‘Hitman’, as fans fondly call him as, spoke on what all he learned as a captain from the Australian cricketing great Ricky Ponting.

I talk to the players and make them feel important: Rohit Sharma

“I see how I can get little contributions from all the players. And of course, my performance is also important,” said the four-time IPL winning skipper in the first episode of India Today Inspiration.

“I want to make sure that the 10 guys who are playing and the other players on the bench, I should be talking to them and make them feel important. And that is something that I learned from Ricky Ponting. The first thing Ponting told me that when you are captaining you can’t be thinking about how you want them to do it.

Always listen to them, take it in your stride and then filter it and give it to them. It was great learning for me when he was part of Mumbai,” added Rohit.

With Mumbai Indians having many young and upcoming talents for the future, when it was asked to him as to how he handles them, Rohit replied that the youngsters perform the best when they are not under any form of pressure.

“Those players will come out good or will be at their best when they are not under pressure. When there is not too much talking going on about them in the squad. They get to know all these things,” added the Mumbaikar.

Mumbai Indians had a bumpy start to IPL 2020 as they lost the tournament opener to MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings.

However, the Men in Blue bounced back well in the game against Kolkata Knight Riders as they beat them comprehensively by a margin of 49 runs, with Rohit being awarded the Man of the Match for his 80 off 54 deliveries comprising 3 fours and 6 sixes.

Mumbai Indians are up against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and the faceoff will take place on September 28 in Dubai.
