Shreyas Iyer has got the potential to lead India one day: Alex Carey

Shreyas Iyer has been a key player for the Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Capitals) from the time he arrived at the mega-T20 tournament in 2015.

In IPL 2018, Iyer was appointed as the skipper midway through the season, and although they couldn’t make the knockouts then, the decision proved fruitful for the Delhi-based franchise in the upcoming years as he led them into playoffs in 2019 and 2020, with their first final appearance in the recently concluded edition.

In 2018 and 2019, Iyer aggregated 411 and 463 runs while averaging over 30 and striking 3 and 4 fifty-plus totals in each edition respectively. It was only last year that the Mumbaikar cemented his spot in the Indian team by clobbering runs at the No 4 position.

He had a decent run in the T20I series against New Zealand played earlier this year wherein he recorded scores of – 58*(29), 44 (33), 17 (16), 1(7), and 33*(31). In IPL 2020, he emerged as one of the highest run-getters of the tournament with over 500 runs and 3 fifties at an average and strike rate of 34.60 and 123.28 respectively.

Shreyas Iyer has got a bright future, says Alex Carey

Australian cricketer Alex Carey, who played under Iyer in IPL 2020, feels that the Delhi Capitals’ skipper is one of the top contenders to lead the Indian cricket team in the future.

“No doubt, he has got the potential to lead India one day. I think Shreyas is going to be a fantastic leader moving forward,” Carey said to Hindustan Times in a media Interaction on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old wicket-keeper batsman further added that Iyer, as a leader, has a positive attitude and is excellent in man-management. His partnerships with DC head coach Ricky Ponting did wonders for the side in IPL 2020.

“His ability to connect with all the players in the group was fantastic. He took the focus off himself and worried more about the group. He has been really successful for the last couple of seasons for Delhi. He is still young and learning his crafts. He is a fantastic batsman and a great person as well.

To connect with every player in a big squad like Delhi is quite a tiring task but he was excellent in managing that. His positive attitude towards the game and his partnership with Ricky (Ponting) really worked well for us. The future is very bright for him,” said Carey.

So far, Iyer has played 22 T20Is and 16 ODIs and has amassed 417 and 748 runs at averages of 27.80 and 49.87 respectively.

Both Shreyas Iyer and Alex Carey have been named in the ODI and T20I squads for their respective teams ahead of India’s tour of Australia that will commence from November 27 starting from the game at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney.
