About Snakes and Ladders
Snakes and ladders is a fun board game for two or more players that has become a worldwide classic over the years. The snakes and ladders board has gridded squares. A considerable number of ladders and snakes are there on the game board and connecting each other. The objective is to monitor one's pawn according to how the dice rolls. Each pawn has to start from the bottom square (1) and go up to the finish square, which has the highest number (100). On the way, they will come across ladders, which will help you propel upwards, while with the snakes, you will slip down.
The game is simple and is very popular with adults and children alike. The snakes and ladders board game is also known as Chutes and Ladders, Bible Ups and Downs, etc. The game is also rooted in morality, on which a player, when they go up the board, represents a life's journey filled with virtues (ladders) and vices (snakes).

Equipment
In this game, the board size might vary, but the most common ones are 8×8, 10×10, or 12×12 squares. The boards have ladders that start and end on particular squares. If you get a snake and go down the grid, your duration to reach the final square increases. The players get distinct game pieces with which they play the game. The players roll one die to determine how they move in the game. Sometimes, two dice are also used in the game to make it shorter
Gameplay
- In the regular snakes and ladders board game, the player starts with the token on the starting square. The grid usually starts with "1", and the players take turns jumping in different squares by rolling a single die and moving the token according to the number shown by the die.
- The players have to follow a fixed route marked on the board from the bottom to the top. While playing a turn, if a token is at the end of a ladder, it then shoots up to the number where it's landing. This means that the player simply jumps a lot of numbers and moves up in the game.
- If a player lands on the face of a snake, the token will slip down several notches to the snake's lower-numbered square.
- If a die rolls the 6, the player moves 6 squares and gets an extra turn. Otherwise, the game moves over to the next player. The first player to bring their token to the last square becomes the winner.
Rules to Remember in Snakes and Ladders
- An unlucky move in the game is when the token lands on the number with the snake's face. The token will then move steadily down and land at the number where the snake's tail ends.
- A lucky move is when the token falls on the ladder's base; the player will immediately move to the top.
- However, the spot will remain unchanged if the player is on the bottom of the snake or the top of the ladder. The player will remain unaffected and will continue to roll the dice. The game rules specify that they can never move down the ladder.
- Two tokens can overlap simultaneously without knocking anyone out. The players can stay on the same number until the dice are rolled for the next turn.
- As you reach closer to the 100 mark, the player has to roll the exact number required. Otherwise, they will have to wait for the next turn. It is in this part that luck comes into play. For instance, if a player reaches 96 and the die rolls a 5, they cannot move the token until it gets the number 4 on the die. If they reach the number 99, they must wait until they get one on the dice.
How to Play Snakes and Ladders Board Game on Rummy Bo?
- To play the game on a physical board, you will need two to four players, a game board, one die-to-roll number, and one game piece (token) per player. Before starting the game, each player rolls the die, and the player with the highest number rolled starts the game.
- You only need the Rummy Bo app and a stable internet connection to play snakes and ladders online. Each player gets three tokens and must bring all three tokens to the last square before the opponent wins the game.
- If a game piece lands at the top of a snake (the snake head), it moves down to the bottom of the snake on its tail.
- If a game piece lands at the bottom of the ladder, the player climbs up the ladder and gets an extra turn to roll the die.
- If a game piece lands in a square on either the top of a ladder or the snake's tail, the token stays put at the same spot or the same number. The players can never move down a ladder or move up a snake. The player can also opt to miss a turn and wait for the next round.
- Per the traditional rules, if a game piece lands on the same number as an opponent's token, no one is knocked out, and both tokens stay put. However, in online snakes and ladders, if your game piece lands on the same spot as the opponent's token, the opponent's game piece is knocked out and has to start the game again.
- To win the game, the players need to roll the exact number of die to land on 100. The players must roll the die in the next turn if they fail to roll the exact number.
Winning in Snakes and Ladders
When a player lands all their tokens in the final square of the board (the number 100) before any other opponent, the snake and ladder game ends. The game may also end once each player has exhausted the given number of moves. Once the game ends, the player with the highest score becomes the winner.
Variations
A variation of the snakes and ladders game is when the player must roll the exact number to reach the square. If the die roll is too large, the token is either in place or goes away from the final square and returns again. For example, if a player requires a 3 in the first turn but rolls a 5 instead, the token will move forward by 3 steps and back by two spaces. Another example is when the player rolls a 5 and needs 1 to win, they will move back by four spaces.
Another game version is Adders and Ladders, which has no dice and at least five of the same tokens. All the players share those tokens. This specimen can be played with five tokens on a five-by-five board. There are no dice; instead, the player chooses a particular token and moves it between one to four spaces. The first player who moves the last token to the last number wins.
The most popular version that is widely played in the United States is Chutes and Ladders by Milton Bradley in 1943. Rather than the snakes, a playground took its place. The game is on a 10x10 board, and players advance their pieces according to a spinner alternatively to a die. The board game's theme is that of a playground showing kids climbing ladders and descending chutes.
