Basic Rules of Points Rummy
- As per the rules of rummy, players aim to earn points, and each point has a specific rupee value. Before starting, each player must bring a minimum amount to the table.
- Every player gets 13 cards randomly, and the game begins when the first card is placed face-up in the open deck.
- The remaining cards are kept face-down in the closed rummy deck. At the start, a joker card is chosen randomly, called a wild joker.
- The goal is to organize all 13 cards into sequences and/or sets, including one pure sequence and one impure sequence.
- Players take turns picking or discarding cards to complete their sets and sequences. Jokers can be used to complete impure sequences and sets.
- To make a valid declaration, a player must group their cards into sets/sequences and click on the 'Declare' button.
- It's compulsory to declare at least two sequences to finish the game, with one of them being a pure sequence.
- If using two decks, the same card can't be used twice in a set (e.g., 8♠ 8♠ 8♥ is invalid).
Points Rummy Rules For Jokers
- In a 13-card rummy game, there are 7 Jokers - 2 Printed Jokers and 5 Wild Card Jokers. Out of the 5 wild jokers, 4 wild jokers can be used by players in the game, while one is placed under the closed deck for all players to see.
- In a 21 Card game, there are 15 Jokers- 2 Printed Jokers and 7 Wild Card Jokers, with 6 value card Jokers.
- You cannot use a printed joker or wild card to make a pure sequence, as that would make it impure.
How to Play Points Rummy?
Points rummy is one of the easiest Indian rummy variants that is also beginner-friendly. To learn how to play points rummy, here are the simple steps every player must know:
Card Points Value
In a points rummy game, the maximum number of points a player can get, including the joker, is 80. The rummy points table calculation is as follows:
- Ace, King, Queen, and Joker – All the face cards carry 10 points each.
- Number 2 to Number 10 – All the numbered cards have points equal to their face value. For instance, the 2 and 7 number cards have 2 and 7 points, respectively.
- Printed Joker and Wild Joker carry zero points in the rummy card game points system.
Objective
To play points rummy game, the goal is to reduce the points in hand to zero by melding all 13 cards into valid sets and sequences. Players try to arrange their 13 cards into valid sets and sequences. The winner is the first person to declare with zero points. The other players get points based on the cards they still have. So, the aim is to have as few points as possible to increase the chances of winning the game.
Deal
After you pay the entry fee, the game begins when two or more players join the table (based on whether you are playing on a 2-player table or 6-player table). At the beginning of the game, a 13 Card hand is dealt to each player. A closed deck called the Draw Pile is placed at the centre of the table. A card is picked from the top of the Draw Pile and placed at the bottom of the pile as the game's wild joker. Another card is then picked and placed face-up at the centre of the table to form the Discard Pile, where players can discard their cards during the game and draw another from the Draw Pile to replace them.
Gameplay
As soon as the game begins, all the players must make card combinations, melding them into sequences and sets. You must make at least two sequences, including a pure rummy sequence. Below is an example of making combinations with a pure sequence:
To make a valid declaration, you must have at least two sequences, including one pure and the other one can be Pure or Impure. If you make a valid declaration and have no unmatched cards, you will win the best possible score – 0 rummy points. If a player makes a valid show but has other unmatched cards, their point value is deducted from the total card points of each player.
How to Win in Points Rummy?
A player can win the points rummy game by making a valid declaration and being the first one to announce on the table. The following mandates are required to make a valid declaration:
- The declaration must have two sequences, one of which must be pure. The player cannot make a valid declaration without a pure sequence. Depending on the cards, the rest of the sequences can be pure or impure.
- The player can use printed jokers or wild jokers to form impure sequences and sets.
- Besides sequences, players can make sets in a points rummy game.
- Be sure you are the first one to make the declaration if you want to be the winner.
How are Winnings Calculated in Points Rummy?
The winning player is the one to make the first valid declaration, and the winner gets a zero score. The winning amount of the winner is calculated using the below formula:
(Total Points of All Opponents) x (Rupee Value of All Points) = Winnings.
Calculating the losing player's score
- The points of the losing players’ ungrouped cards are calculated when a player makes a valid declaration. For instance, a losing player has three ungrouped cards, which are 7 of Spades, Ace of Hearts, and 9 of Spades; the player gets 7+10+9 = 26 points as a penalty.
- If a player hasn’t made a pure sequence, the point value of all the cards in hand will be added to calculate the penalty points.
- According to points of rummy, the maximum cap is 80 points. Even if the calculated score is more than 80 points, the maximum points total can only be 80 points for each player.
- If a player has made one pure sequence, the point value of only the ungrouped cards is added to calculate the penalty points. Also, the sets aren't counted till a player has at least two sequences, including a pure sequence. So, if a player makes a pure sequence and a set, but not one more sequence, the value of his ungrouped cards, including any set, will be added to calculate penalty points.
Calculating Drop Points in Points Rummy
In a rummy game, a player can choose to leave the game. The player has to use the "Drop" option where they can exit the game without losing a huge margin. When you have a weak hand or bad cards, go for it.
- First Drop: When a player drops without picking any card from the Draw Pile, it is the first drop. The penalty is 20 points.
- Middle Drop: When the players drop out after picking at least one card, it is the middle drop. The penalty here is 40 points.
- Consecutive Misses: The players are automatically dropped out from the game after missing three consecutive turns. This is considered as the middle drop, with a penalty of 40 points.
Tips To Win Points Rummy
- Discard high-value cards that are not part of melds or are difficult to meld.
- Use the Joker effectively to create impure sequences and sets.
- Begin with forming a pure sequence, which is mandatory and can reduce penalty points if another player declares.
- If you feel you have been dealt a weak hand and you are considering a drop, it’s wise to go for the First Drop. For a first drop, you get 20 penalty points. If you go for a middle drop or miss three consecutive turns, you get 40 penalty points.
- Pay attention to the cards your opponents are discarding. You can predict which type of cards they are holding and avoid discarding those cards.
