Contents
The Bundesliga, also known as Fußball-Bundesliga, is the top-tier football league in Germany where 18 teams compete every season. Theofficial Bundesliga organising body is know as Deutsche Fußball Liga.
Like theEnglishPremier League andLa Liga, there is a promotion and relegation system here as well. However, only two football clubs get relegated in Bundesliga every season. Founded in 1963, the Bundesliga has seen 56 different clubs competing in it so far. The league size has been limited to 18 teams since it was first decided in 1992, prior to which Bundesliga had 20 teams for a season.
The most successful team in the league has been FC Bayern Munich – the 30-time Bundesliga champions – although others like Borussia Dortmund, Hamburger SV, Werder Bremen and others have experienced from time to time.

Bayern Munich
FC Koln were the first-ever Bundesliga champions with Meidericher SV finishing as the runners-up. Bayern Munich were the Bundesliga champions for the first time in the 1968-69 season with the 1970s in Bundesliga pretty much a two-horse race between the Bavarians and Borussia Mönchengladbach. While Borussia Mönchengladbach gradually fizzled out thereafter, Bayern Munich remained in contention with a league title-win win at regular intervals.
Over the past 58 years, Bundesliga has seen 29 different football clubs. Following Bayern Munich, Borussia Monchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund are the second-most successful teams in Bundesliga. Both the clubs have won five league titles each.

The most successful striker in Bundesliga has been Gerd Muller, who has scored over an unparalleled 365 goals in the league in 427 appearances to becomeBundesliga top scorer. The German international was the joint top-scorer alongside Lothar Emmerich for the first time in 1966-67 and has since been the Bundesliga top scorere seven times.
Gerd Muller is followed by another Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski, who trails the German forward by 65 goals in goal-tally. The towering Polish striker broke Muller’s record of scoring 40 goals a season when he ended the 2021-21 season with 41 goals to his tally and is currently the favourite to topple the German legend in the next few seasons.
Lewandowski has won the Bundesliga Golden Boot six times so far and is followed by Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Ulf Kirsten who has won the award thrice.

Udo Lattek has been the most successful manager in Bundesliga with as many as eight titles to his name. He managed Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach during his Bundesliga managerial stint. He won six Bundesliga titles with the Bavarians and two with Monchengladbach.
The second-most successful manager in Bundesliga is Ottmar Hitzfeld with seven league titles to his name. He had managed Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, winning five titles with the former and two with Dortmund.
Jupp Heynckes and Hennes Weisweiler have won four titles each, with Pep Guardiola, Felix Magath and Otto Rehhagel having three to their names as managers.
Bundesliga clubs in UEFA Champions League
There have only been three Bundesliga clubs who have been Champions League winners. Unsurprisingly, Bayern Munich have been the most successful with six titles to their name. Apart from them, Borussia Dortmund and Hamburg have one title each.
Bundesliga is also the fourth most successful league in the European competition as per UEFA coefficient rankings.
