The La Liga, also known as the Primera División, is the top-tier football tournament in Spain where 20 teams compete every season. Like the English Premier League, there are 20 clubs competing in La Liga every year with the bottom three getting relegated while the top four finishing clubs qualify for the UEFA Champions League. The clubs finishing fourth and fifth get to play in the UEFA Europa League.
La Liga was formed in 1929 with the Real Federación Española de Fútbol shortlisting 10 teams to compete in the very first edition of La Liga, which was won by FC Barcelona. The league remained suspended between 1936 and 1939 due to the Spanish Civil War.
Over the last few decades, the number of teams competing in La Liga has changed multiple times. After there were 10 teams from 1929-to 1934, the league got expanded to 12 clubs between 1934 and 1941. It was further increased to 14 teams from 1941-1950, 16 teams from 1950-1971, and to 18 teams between 1971 and 1987.
The La Liga season between 1987 and 1995 had 20 teams before it even got stretched to 22 teams from 1995-1997. However, it was again reduced to 20 teams in 1997 and La Liga has since maintained that size.

The very first winner of La Liga Golden Boot was real Sociedad’s Paco Bienobas and although Real Madrid dominated proceedings back then, it wasn’t until the 1931-32 La Liga season that the Whites saw a La Liga top-scorer in Manuel Olivares.
From Ronaldo Nazario and Raul Gonzalez to Luis Figo and Samuel Eto’o, La Liga has seen some of the best goalscorers in world football gracing the league. However, none came close to the intense competition between Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, whose intense rivalry from 2011 to 2015 ushered a new era in world football. The two forwards outscored each other every alternative season producing some world-class performances.
La Liga and Barcelona legend Lionel Messi remained the top scorer for five consecutive seasons from 2016 to 2021 – an unparalleled feat in La Liga. Prior to him, it was Real Madrid’s Hugo Sanchez who was the La Liga top scorer on three consecutive seasons from 1985 to 1988.
