Indian Super League 2022-23 season: Schedule, Fixtures, Teams, Timetable

Introduction

The Indian Super League is the premier football competition in the country where the elite Indian football stars and some of Asia’s top talents ply their trade. A total of 11 teams compete in the Indian Super League league cum knockout format tournament with each club playing 20 matches in the league stages before the playoffs begin.

Since its inaugural season in 2014, the Indian Super League (ISL) has gradually become one of the most successful franchise-based sports leagues in the country after the Indian Premier League. The past seven seasons have seen some high-profile coaches and players gracing the Indian football league to produce world-class action.

There have been five different winners in the Indian Super League tournament so far – Atletico de Kolkata, Chennaiyin FC, Bengaluru FC, Mumbai City FC and Hyderabad FC – all of whom boast of huge fan bases. Apart from the celebrated ISL winners, the Indian Super League clubs like Kerala Blasters, FC Goa, Jamshedpur FC and others have seen big fan groups mushrooming in different parts of the country.

Starting from October 7, 2022, the Indian Super League will go on till March 2023. The dates of the final three knockout matches are yet to be announced. So far, only the league stage fixtures have been released by the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The remaining fixture will be released later.

ATK Mohun Bagan ISL 2022-23 season preview

If there has been one team that was really consistent in the past two seasons of the Indian Super League, it is ATK Mohun Bagan. While the Mariners have been trophyless in the last two editions of ISL, they have finished as a finalist and a semi-finalist in consecutive years. While it was ISL 2020-21 winners Mumbai City FC, who had beaten them to the League Winners Shield and the ISL trophy in 2022, it was Jamshedpur FC who beat the Mariners to the knockout stages in 2022. However, the cash-rich team hasn’t stopped assembling a star-studded squad regardless of the results. They have added Asish Rai and Ashique Kuruniyan to bolster their wing with pace and aggression to further aid the Indian striking duo of manvir Singh and Liston Colaco. However, it is their foreign recruitment that could be the difference maker for ATK Mohun Bagan. In Florentin Pogba, Dimitri Petratos and Brendan Hamill, ATKMB have a trio that would more than compensate for the departure of Roy Krishna – one of ISL top scorers – and propel the team to yet another title challenge for the third season running. Though coach Juan Ferrando’s uber-offensive coaching style has been questioned at times, he has players at his disposal who could execute it to perfection now.

Bengaluru FC ISL 2022-23 season preview

Since their entry into the Indian Super League in the 2017-18 season, Bengaluru FC have risen to the top as well as fallen from grace. After finishing as the finalists in the first season, the Blues went on to win the trophy the very next season and ended as the semi-finalists in their third season. However, Sunil Chhetri and Co. has since finished 7th and 8th in ISL and don’t come into ISL 2022-23 as one of the top four contenders. But, the Blues have made some serious upgrades in the squad this time with the likes of Prabir Das, Sandesh Jhingan and Aleksandar Jovanovic bolstering their backline. The import of the adventurous Jihari Mondal should also make the fans excited. Apart from them, the imports of experienced midfielder Javi Hernandez and ISL’s all-time fourth-highest goalscorer Roy Krishna will also play to their advantage this time.

Chennaiyin FC ISL 2022-23 season preview

Two-time ISL champions Chennaiyin FC have evidently lost their magic touch over the past few seasons. The Marina Machans excelled in scrapping a top-four finish before outperforming everyone in the knockout stages to lift the ISL trophy. Their two title wins came from third and second league finishes. However, their eighth-place finish in the last two seasons have understandably taken away the confidence from the team. In former German footballer Thomas Brdaric, CFC do have an interesting gaffer at the helm and rightly backed him with a whopping 18 new signings this summer. With some towering foreign imports, CFC could be a strong side to beat in ISL this season as well as defend from set-pieces. The likes of Vincy Barretto and Alexander Romario are expected to provide the perfect aid to Anirudh Thapa as CFC look to turn tables after four long seasons.

SC East Bengal ISL 2022-23 season preview

Unlike their archrivals ATK Mohun Bagan, SC East Bengal have been a disaster in the Indian Super League in the past two seasons. While there were signs of recovery in the ISL 2020-21 season in the later stages, last season saw the Red and Gold brigade dwindling further down to finish last in the ISL points table. However, the SCEB management has brought in former Indian national team coach Stephen Constantine to make things right and the veteran has roped in the experienced likes of Ivan Gonzalves, Cleiton Silva and Alex Lima in foreign imports and Jerry Lalrinzuala, Aniket Jadhav and VP Suhair in Indian names. Honestly, East Bengal still don’t look like a top-four contender with the current squad but it could spell the start of a revamp their fanbase is hoping for. Moreover, fans would be hoping for a more competitive Kolkata derby this time.

FC Goa ISL 2022-23 season preview

FC Goa, like ATK Mohun Bagan, have been pretty consistent with their performances in the Indian Super League. They have reached the final twice and ended their campaign in the semi-finals four times. However, a steady exodus of star players, as well as managers, mean the Gaurs could never really get their footing properly. After Juan Ferrando left the team to coach ATKMB mid-season, Goa have now appointed former player Carlos Pena at the helm and he has brought in four Spaniards to further bolster the squad. FC Goa’s biggest strength this season will be their midfield, where an already established Brandon Fernandes and Edu Bedia will be supported by new buys Alvaro Vazquez and Marc Valiente.

Hyderabad FC ISL 2022-23 season preview

Not many would have tipped Hyderabad FC to be a top-four contender last season let alone win the championship, but the Nizams made the title chase their own with a squad that placed their faith mostly in Indian youth. Barring a few exports here and there, Hyderabad have maintained their core this season as well with Bart Ogbeche their source of goal flanked by Javier Siverio and Halicharan Narzary. While Asish Rai’s departure has left a hole, the manager Manolo Marquez would use the likes of Reagan Singh or Nikhil Poojary in the right-back position. HFC’s best transfer buy, however, as been the re-signing of Odei Onaindia at the back.

Jamshedpur FC ISL 2022-23 season preview

Like Hyderabad FC, Jamshedpur FC had also stunned football fans with their brand of football last season as they went on to finish atop the league table and win the League Winners Shield. However, they had to replace the vibrant Owen Coyle with Aidy Boothroyd ahead of the new season and the team might need to press the reset button after a wonderful ISL 2021-22 season. However, in the likes of new imports Harry Sawyer and Jay Thomas in the attacking third, the Red Mariners’ intent is quite obvious in the absence of last season’s star Greg Stewart. To further keep the balance, JFC have managed to keep their core of Farukh Choudhary, TP Rehnesh, Wellington Priori and more.

Kerala Blasters ISL 2022-23 season preview

Last season was the third time in Kerala Blasters’ ISL history that they reached the final and lost. However, given how the previous four seasons had panned out, where the Tuskers had failed to even make the top four, this was a massive upgrade and coach Ivan Vukomanovic would want to capitalize on optimism that is buzzing in the Kerala Blasters camp at the moment. However, with the likes of Vincy Barretto, Alvaro Vazquez and Enes Sipovic all leaving, it will be an uphill task for sure. Though the Blasters have filled the void quickly by bringing in players like Apostolos Giannou, Dimitrios Diamantakos and Victor Mongil in the summer, much will rest on their quick adaption. In Saurav Mandal and Bidyashagar Singh, Kerala have also added a good Indian backup to the squad that had missed the ISL trophy by a whisker last season.

Mumbai City FC ISL 2022-23 season preview

After a dismal fifth-placed finish last season, Mumbai City FC are bound to come back stronger this season with manager Des Buckingham getting a proper pre-season this time. Apart from that, the Islanders have also signed last season’s player of the season Greg Stewart to bolster their title chances this time. With the financial backing of CFG, Mumbai City FC were always going to respond sturdily and they have done exactly that by roping in Rostyn Griffiths, Alberto Noguera, Jorge Pereyra Diaz and more. Buckingham’s players are already executing the plan as was evident in their Durand Cup campaign, where MCFC reached the final before losing to Bengaluru FC.

NorthEast United FC ISL 2022-23 season preview

One of the perenially poor performers in the Indian Super League, NorthEast United FC will yet again start the season as the favourites to finish somewhere in the mid-table to lower table. The Highlanders’ best finish in the ISL came in the ISL 2018-19 season when they reached the semi-finals under the guidance of Eelco Schattorie. Under new coach Marco Balbul, NEUFC will again follow the same blueprint where they will rely on a lot of young players to get the job done. However, playing in front of their vociferous fans might just make the difference for them this time. In the likes of Romain Phillippoteaux, Matt Derbyshire and Jon Gaztanaga, NorthEast United have roped in some talented players who could up the game for them this season.

Odisha FC ISL 2022-23 season preview

Odisha FC have been one of those teams in the Indian Super League, who have impressed one and all with their occasional high-level performances but have no trophy to show for it. This will be the fourth season in ISL for the Juggernauts and under old coach Josep Gombau the side has made some interesting recruitments to become a strong competitor. In the likes of Narender Gahlot and Raynier Fernandes, the team will have a solid defensive midfield with the back further bolstered by the import of Amrinder Singh from ATK Mohun Bagan. ATKMB have also loaned out Michael Soosairaj to Odisha FC, a mercurial winger who can create chances as well as score goals if he keeps his injuries at bay.
