One of the few teams to have never won the Big Bash League title, Hobart Hurricanes have come agonisingly close to lifting the mantle on more than one occasion. Over the years, the Hurricanes have seen some prominent T20 stars, like Jofra Archer, George Bailey, Dan Christian and more, donning the iconic purple jersey to fire up the Bellerive Oval, University of Tasmania Stadium – the fortress of the Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes started off their Big Bash League journey with a strong semi-final finish in the first edition, but all the promise soon went downhill. They finished the second season on a dismal sixth place and needed a revamp of the side to come back stronger. The reshuffle worked as the Hurricanes finished as the runners-up in the third season, a campaign that should have gone in their favour.
Hurricanes’ downfall started here as they went three seasons without a knockout qualification before a runners-up finish in the seventh season. Hurricanes had their best season in the eighth edition as they finished first in the league stages before experiencing their second semi-final loss in tournament history. They maintained their momentum in the 2019-20 season as well with an eliminator finish before a sixth-place finish last season.

Cricket Australia star D’Acry Short has been the top runscorer for the Hurricanes with 2203 runs to his name in 60 matches so far. He has also scored 19 half-centuries and two centuries from 2016 to 2021. While Short has been the top run-scorer for the Hurricanes, it is Matthew Wade who has the highest score of an unbeaten 130 to his name.
Bowling Stats
Australia’s Riley Meredith has taken the most wickets for the Hurricanes so far, with 43 scalps in 34 BBL matches. Cameron Boyce also sits at the top with 43 wickets, but the bowler has taken 41 matches to get to them.
However, the best bowling figures for the Hurricanes belong to Dan Christian, who took five wickets in his quota of four overs and conceded just 14 runs. D’Arcy Short also boasts of a five0-wicket haul for the Hurricanes.
Team Stats
The highest team score tallied by the Hurricanes was against Melbourne Renegades Sixers in the 2016-17 season when they tallied 223 runs away from home in Docklands. Hurricanes’ lowest total came against Sydney Sixers in the 2015-16 BBL season, where they were bundled for 91 runs within 16 overs.
Hurricanes’ largest victory came in a Champions League Twenty20 match against Northern Districts on September 23, 2014, which they had won by 86 runs.
