Ravindra Jadeja – The Best Indian All-rounder?

Introduction

Ravindra Jadeja or ‘Sir’ as he is popularly known in cricketing circles, has transformed himself into one of the best all-rounders there is currently in India. Vice-captain of the India U19 side that won the World Cup in 2008, Jadeja has truly come of age in the last few years.

A more than handy batsman, a consistent left-arm spinner, and probably the best fielder in the world, Jadeja is truly a captain’s delight. However, the road has been anything but rosy for the all-rounder from Saurashtra. From being the butt of all jokes on social media be it for his three first-class triple centuries or his subpar show in the 2009 Champions Trophy, Jadeja has often been the center of all unwanted backlash.

Jadeja did not have the best of seasons in 2009-10 but he always had the backing of MS Dhoni. He slowly made his way into the Indian T20 and ODI side while kept at it in the domestic circuit. Jadeja scored his maiden first-class triple century in November 2011, followed it up with another one in November 2012, and then became the first Indian to score three first-class triple centuries in December 2013.

By the sheer weight of his performances, Jadeja was given a Test call-up for the series against England in the 2012-13 season. In early 2013, Jadeja forged a vital partnership with R Ashwin as India recorded a historic whitewash series win over the touring Australians. In the same year, India won the ICC Champions Trophy in England where Jadeja won the Golden Ball for his stupendous performances with the ball all through the tournament.

Jadeja and Ashwin have been critical to India’s success in Tests especially in the subcontinent. They haven’t quite replicated the same form in limited-overs cricket but Jadeja due to his all-round skills still remains a potent force. Since the 2018 season, Jadeja has consistently been part of all the Indian sides across formats and the faith shown by the management has started to bear fruit.

In October 2018, Jadeja scored his first century in Test cricket. Then during the second ODI against Australia in March 2019, the left-arm spinner became only the third Indian cricketer to score 2,000 runs and take 150 wickets in ODIs. During the 2019 Cricket World Cup, Jadeja waged a lone hand in the semi-final against New Zealand where he scored a 59-ball 77 almost taking India into the final.

Jadeja picked his 200th Test wicket during the first Test against South Africa in October 2019. He was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2019.

In the IPL, Jadeja has turned out for four teams – Rajasthan Royals, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Gujarat Lions, and Chennai Super Kings. Nicknamed ‘Rockstar’ by Shane Warne, Jadeja immediately became a crowd favorite at Rajasthan and was a key figure behind their win in the inaugural season in 2008. Jadeja was picked by Chennai Super Kings in the 2012 auction for a massive $2 million and was with the franchise till their two-year ban in 2015. During this time Jadeja turned out for Gujarat Lions before returning to Chennai in 2018. He will play for the same franchise come IPL 2021. Jadeja has been a solid performer in the IPL where he has played 184 matches, scored 2159 runs at 25.4, and picked 114 wickets at 30.44.
