Switzerland will host Spain in a Group 2 match in Geneva in the UEFA Nations League.
Switzerland have lost both their matches and are yet to register a point in the Nations League. They were humiliated 4-0 by Portugal in their last match and are now in the dire hunt for a win.
The Swiss defence has struggled to keep resistance as their last win came back in 2021 when they thrashed Bulgaria in a World Cup qualifier match.
They are currently winless in their last four matches in all competitions and relegation to League B is looming large on them as they somehow need to grind op a win in the Nations League.
However, their home record is somewhat they can vouch for as they haven’t lost a game on their home soil in the last 11 matches. Coach Murat Yakin’s imminent future is now safe but another loss could provide some food for thought to the Swiss football association.
Spain have looked unimpressive in the Nations League as they have had two draws so far in the tournament. The Czech Republic were on their course to a famous win over Spain with goals from Jakub Pesek and Jan Kuchta but a late goal from Inigo Martinez salvaged a draw. The other goal was scored by Gavi who became the youngest ever goalscorer for Spain.
They had the same kind of fate in the first game when Portugal scored a late equaliser to deny Spain a victory. Spain narrowly edged the Swiss side in their last two matches in the Nations League and later in Madrid in 2020 and the host country then played a draw with Gerard Moreno netting for the Spanish team.
Luis Enrique’s decision to ignore David de Gea raised many questions as the Spanish manager preferred Unai Simon, David Raya and Robert Sanchez for the national team.
The manager later clarified De Gea’s distribution and his ability in aerial balls were the reason behind his selection.
