Chelsea welcome Real Madrid at home in the UEFA Champions League 2021-22 quarter-finals – Watch live in India

UEFA Champions League 2021-22 quarter-finals

The UEFA Champions League 2021-22 quarter-finals will see Chelsea FC hosting 13-time Champions League winners Real Madrid at the Stamford Bridge for the first leg on April 7, 2022. The other match will see Bayern Munich will visit Villarreal at the Estadio de la Ceramica on the very same day.

Although Chelsea have been marred by a series of off-field controversies including deliberation regarding ownership, their continental title defence has been going pretty well so far. An underwhelming LOSC Lille side were hardly any match for The Blues in the Champions League Round of 16 stages and Thomas Tuchel’s side ended up winning 4-1 on aggregate.

They already had one foot in the last eight of the competition after securing a 2-0 win over Les Dogues at home. Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic scored on either side of the half-time break for the French club.

In the reverse fixture at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, Burak Yilmaz’s spot-kick offered them a glimpse of hope before it was extinguished altogether. Christian Pulisic and Cesar Azpilicueta scored to confirm Chelsea’s spot in the quarter-finals.

The situation surrounding The Blues has been chaotic for a long time. Sanctions were imposed on them by the UK government as their former owner Roman Abramovich had close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, responsible for the invasion of Ukraine. However, Chelsea had done a tremendous job to retain their focus on the pitch, until this weekend.

Thomas Tuchel’s side inexplicably conceded four goals against 14th placed Brentford at home. Antonio Rudiger had opened the scoring in the match but Chelsea were swept away with a swarm of goals from the Bees in the second half which included Christian Eriksen scoring for the first time since his return to the Premier League.

Seeing their six-game unbeaten run across all competitions come to an end would’ve been fantastic news for Real Madrid but Los Blancos are far from their best as well. Their 0-4 humbling at the hands of arch-rivals Barcelona is still in the minds of supporters and Chelsea haven’t gone out of the Champions League at the quarter-finals stage since 2010-11.

Real Madrid looked sloppy against Celta Vigo in La Liga this weekend and they received three penalty calls in their favour which decided the match. Several of those decisions were slammed for being dodgy but Madrid will take all the help they can get.

Head coach Carlo Ancelotti has been diagnosed with COVID-19 and his son, Davide, was in the dugout for the game against Celta Vigo. It’s still unclear whether Ancelotti will be able to manage Real Madrid in this clash in London.

Trailing by 0-2 with 45 minutes left in the Champions League, Real Madrid wrote yet another chapter in PSG’s long list of embarrassing exits from the European competition. The Parisian club have a knack of shooting themselves in the foot and that is exactly what they did when they switched completely off in the final stages of the tie. That allowed Madrid’s fulcrum in attack Karim Benzema to capitalize with a sensational hattrick. Benzema also found the back of the net from the penalty spot against Celta this weekend.

Meanwhile, Bayern will travel to the small city of Villarreal in Spain to take on the Yellow Submarine. The Bavarians will be buoyed by the return of Canadian full-back Alphonso Davies who had been diagnosed with a heart condition a few months ago.
