About Big Bash League (BBL)
The Big Bash League is one of the most popular leagues in the world. Second, possibly only to the Indian Premier League in terms of viewership and quality of cricket, the Big Bash League has been innovative in every facet. Like the IPL, the BBL attracts players from all across the world, which makes the tournament an even riveting watch. In addition, the surfaces in the BBL have something in them for both the batsmen and bowlers, which make the overall cricket a delight to watch.
The Twenty20 league was established by Cricket Australia in 2011 and is sponsored by the fast-food outlet KFC. So far, there have been 10 seasons of the BBL, and the Big Bash League, 2021-22, will be the 11th edition. The tournament features eight city-based franchises – Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunder, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Hobart Hurricanes, Brisbane Heat, Perth Scorchers and Adelaide Strikers. Six of the eight teams have won the BBL at least once. Perth Scorchers and Adelaide are the most successful teams in the BBL, with three titles each to their name.
Sydney Sixers won the first edition of the BBL in 2011-12, beating Perth Scorchers in the final. Both Scorchers and Sixers have been among the most consistent teams in the competition, consistently reaching the knockout stages.
Another reason behind BBL’s popularity is the innovations it brings. BBL has always been a step ahead in innovations, introducing the bat flip instead of the traditional coin toss or elements like Power Surge, X-Factor Player and the Bash Boost.
HOWEVER, the BBL numbers in terms of viewership have fallen over the last couple of years. This is attributed to the absence of most Australian superstars from the competition who are primarily on international duty when the BBL is on. The tournament is majorly played between Dec to Feb each year.

BBL 2021-22 Teams
There are currently eight teams taking part in the Big Bash League. Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers are the most successful franchises in the tournament, with three titles each. Adelaide Strikers, Melbourne Renegades, Brisbane Heat and Sydney Thunder have lifted the trophy once. Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes are the only two teams never to win the championship.
Here’s a brief about each team at the BBL 2021-22.
1) Sydney Sixers
Sydney Sixers won the inaugural edition of BBL, beating Perth Scorchers in the final and have not looked back since. One of the most consistent teams in the tournament, Sixers initially found it hard to recruit players from the state with Sydney Thunder also around. However, under the captaincy of Brad Haddin, they struck gold right from the start. After finishing third in the league stage, they defeated Hobart Hurricanes in the semi-final before trouncing Perth in the final. The following season wasn’t too great for them as they finished seventh on the points table. A title eluded them for the next few years, but Sydney Sixers more than made up for it by winning back-to-back titles in 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.
Sixers have had a few captains over the years, from Steve Smith to Marcus North, but their most successful captain undoubtedly has been Moises Henriques. He continues to lead the team to date and with a lot of success. Mitchell Starc, Steve Smith, James Vince and Tom Curran have all turned out for Sydney Sixers over the 11 seasons of the BBL.
2) Perth Scorchers
Perth Scorchers is a franchise based out of Perth and one of the most successful and consistent teams in the tournament. Currently led by Mitchell Marsh, Perth Scorchers were runners up in the first two editions of BBL. They ended the streak by winning the 2013-14 edition and followed it up with another win the following season. Perth finished in third place in the 2015-16 season before winning their record third title in 2016-17.
That being said, the 2019 and 2020 seasons haven’t been great for the Perth Scorchers, where they have failed to make it to the playoffs phase. They will be keen on getting back to winning ways come the 2021-22 season.
3) Melbourne Renegades
Melbourne Renegades haven’t been the most consistent sides in the BBL, which is disappointing as they have had several promising players in the set-up. They have failed to qualify for the playoffs in 7 of the 10 editions. The Renegades do have a BBL title to their name. They won the championship in 2018-19 in dramatic fashion beating Melbourne Stars in the finale.
Aaron Finch has been the Renegades captain for 9 seasons from 2012 to 2020. However, this season, Nic Maddinson will lead the unit with David Saker as coach. The Indians will closely follow the Renegades side in the upcoming season. Unmukt Chand became the first Indian to be drafted by the Renegades franchise after shifting base to the US and will be looked at closely.
4) Melbourne Stars
The Stars are the equivalent of the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. A lot of superstars in the team but an empty cabinet in terms of trophies. Melbourne Stars have made it to the playoffs in 8 of the 10 seasons and finished runners-up thrice, but the trophy still eludes them.
Shane Warne, Peter Handscomb, Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell have all graced a Stars jersey. Maxwell currently leads the Stars side. The Melbourne Derby is one of the most-watched matches in BBL.
5) Adelaide Strikers
The winners of the 2017-18 edition of the Big Bash League, Adelaide Strikers, have blown hot and cold. They started the BBL poorly, finishing 6th, 5th and 7th on the points table in teh first three years. However, they picked up the pace and topped the standing in the subsequent editions.
The last season wasn’t fruitful for the Strikers as they were knocked out in the Eliminator by Sydney Thunder. Peter Siddle currently leads the Strikers outfit, with Rashid Khan being one of their trump cards.
6) Brisbane Heat
Brisbane Heat has been one of the most electric franchises in BBL history. They have always boasted of a power-packed top-order and excellent bowling unit. Brisbane Heat won the second edition of the BBL, beating Perth Scorchers in a pulsating final.
While the Brisbane side has always had great players, they haven’t always been on the right side of the result. Barring the season they finished as champions, Brisbane Heat has rarely been able to qualify for the knockout stages. Chris Lynn leads the team.
7) Sydney Thunder
The other team from Sydney, Thunder, won the fifth edition of the Big Bash League. The team performed relatively poorly in the initial years of the tournament. They finished at the bottom of the points table the first three years and seventh the following season. However, they staged a dramatic turnaround to lift the BBL championship in 2015-16. Their popularity was that they were the most-watched team in Australia during that season.
Apart from winning the title in 2015-16, Thunder has been below par. They have failed to qualify for the playoffs on 7 occasions, and even last year could only finish fourth.
8) Hobart Hurricanes
The other team to never lay hands on the BBL trophy, Hobart Hurricanes, has qualified twice but never won it. They have been relatively consistent, managing to make it to the playoffs five times out of 10.
George Bailey and Time Paine have been the longest-serving captains for Hobart, while Peter Handscomb current leads the team. The most significant entity to come out of the Hobarts unit is Jofra Archer, who made quite a name in BBL 7.
BBL Rules Explained
The Big Bash League is known for several innovations, and the 2021-22 season will be no different. Here are some of the innovations added in BBL 2021.
1) X-Factor Player
Teams can substitute an X-factor player at the end of 10 overs in the first innings. The player must be named a 12th or 13th man on the team sheet. He can replace any player on the team who is yet to bat or has bowled one over or less.
2) Bash Boost
Bash Boost is one extra point that is awarded to a team in the middle of the second innings. The rules for Bash Boost is simple. The chasing side will be awarded one bonus point if they are above the equivalent 10-over score of the opposition. If the batting side fails to do so, the chasing side will get the extra point. A team can score a maximum of four points from a match.
3) Power Surge
Power Surge in BBL 2021-22 is two overs during which the fielding side can only have two players outside the inner circle. The side batting can opt for the Power Surge anytime from the 11th over. The Powerplay at the start of the innings is now reduced to four overs. Power Surge gives batting teams a chance to up the ante in the middle overs as well.
